Cathay Pacific is introducing blockchain technology for its Asia Miles reward program.

With the help of Accenture, the airline and Asia Miles have created a new platform and mobile app where members will receive air miles over a single distributed ledger. The activities would be seen bycustomers, the airlines’ partners and the airline manager member rewards in real-time.

According to an announcement from the airline, the use of blockchain will help to reduce back-office administration.

In a statement from the airline, it said: "By harnessing blockchain technology, the Cathay Pacific Group and Asia Miles are providing Asia Miles partners a single data source when managing account activity. This allows Asia Miles, partners, and members a near real-time ability to manage rewards."

Cathay Pacific joins a growing number of airlines integrating blockchain tech including Singapore Airlines, which launched their own loyalty wallet app earlier this year. Low-cost carrier Air Asia has also announced their own blockchain-powered rewards program using a cryptocurrency named "Big Coin."
