As airlines in Asia are competing with low cost airlines, Shanghai-based China Eastern is now offering basic economy fares on select flights.
The new fare class will offer no-frills travel without check-in baggage allowance, upgrades/changes, or select your seat. These fares will also be non-refundable, and will be available for China Eastern's international flights within Asia. Also, travelers who book the fares will have to board the aircraft last.
While the fares are available to destinations in Asia, it will not be offered on travel to the North America, Europe, or within China. When booking online, the airline's website will give a notice to travelers about the fare restrictions.
The move to introduce the new basic economy fares comes as China Eastern is positioning itself to better compete with local and foreign low cost airlines operating domestic and international flights in China. Along with offering the new fare class, the airline has revealed plans it will also expand its Beijing-based low cost subsidiary China United to offer regional flights.
