In a Tweet by AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes, the low cost airline will remove the payment processing fee for travelers who make payments using online banking and credit cards starting in October.

“We (will) still have some charges to drive traffic to cheaper, safer and less fraudless (sic) methods. But there will be methods with no fees,” said Fernandes.

The typical processing fee AirAsia charges for processing online transactions is around RM4 (~USD $1). Those who pay with UnionPay may see fees of RM16 (~USD $3.88) while users of BigPay – AirAsia’s e-wallet app – will see no fees.

The change follows Bank Negara Malaysia’s – Malaysia’s central bank - Payment Card Reform Framework which was introduced in March of 2018. It prohibits Malaysian companies from imposing surcharges on payments using debit or credit cards.
