As part of an effort to reduce costs amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Cathay Pacific is closing three North-American flight attendant bases.
The Hong Kong-based airline “made the difficult decision to close” to close three flight crew bases in the United States – Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York – which will affect 286 employees.
The round of base closures come after it closed its Vancouver crew base which affected 147 employees as part of a business review.
Cathay Pacific adds that it is “communicating with our people and the union”. The airline said today that it was “impossible to predict” when passenger demand would recover from the coronavirus crisis. It expects to carry fewer than 1,000 passengers a day in April, compared with a more normal 100,000 a day.
Along with the flight crew base closures, the airline will also furlough 201 pilots based in Australia and Britain.
