Ahead of the turnover of the Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA) to Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC/Aboitiz), the infrastructure arm of the Philippine conglomerate Aboitiz Group announced it will invest PHP 4.53 billion (~USD $81.2 million) for the expansion and upgrade of the facilities at the BPIA.

In a statement, the Aboitiz – which was awarded a contract by the Philippine government for the management and operations of the BPIA -for a 30-year concession period in November 2024 – announced the PHP $4.53 billion investment plan will see the company expand the current passenger terminal building at BPIA, install modern aviation systems, and enhance the airside and landside activities.

Within 1-2 from the takeover in June 2025, Aboitiz aims to boost the current passenger traffic capacity at BPIA from 2 million per year to 2.5 million. The capacity will also be increased to 3.9 million passengers per year by 2030.

According to Aboitiz, the modernization of the BPIA will complement the Bohol Provincial Planning and Development Office's economic priorities which includes sustainable tourism, climate-smart agriculture, and micro-enterprise growth.

“The modernization of BPIA is not just about upgrading infrastructure—it’s about enabling the continued rise of Bohol as a vibrant tourism and economic hub in the Visayas,” said Cosette V. Canilao, President/CEO, AIC.  “We are proud to support the province’s aspirations through transformative infrastructure ecosystems such as BPIA.”

Upon the takeover of the BPIA, Aboitiz will add to its portfolio of airport operations within the Philippines including the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and Laguindingan Airport – which serves as the primary gateway to the city of Cagayan de Oro and the Province of Misamis Oriental in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao.

“This project reinforces our goal of elevating airport experiences while contributing to local economies. We look forward to bringing our proven track record at MCIA to Bohol and working with stakeholders to unlock the full potential of the province’s ‘Green Gateway to the World’ and deliver unique Boholano hospitality in our service,” said AIC Vice President and Head of Airports Business Rafael M. Aboitiz.

First opened in 2018, the BPIA has become the 6thbusiest airport in the Philippines. According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the BPIA served over 1.6 million passengers in 2023. The airport serves both domestic and international flights. Destinations within the Philippines include Manila, Clark, and Davao. International flights are operated to Seoul and Busan in South Korea, and Taipei, Taiwan.
