Air New Zealand announced the renewal of its partnership with Air China through 2031.
The renewal of the partnership – first established in 2015 – will allow customers of both Star Alliance member carriers access on each other carriers' networks. Air New Zealand's customers have access to more than 30 destinations in Mainland China through Air China's domestic network via Beijing and Shanghai. In return, Air China's customers can connect onwards with Air New Zealand within the country.
Through the partnership, more than 480,000 visitors have traveled to New Zealand via Beijing and Shanghai, contributing an estimated NZD $3 billion (~USD $1.73 billion) to the local economy during the past decade. In 2025, the partnership carried more than 56,000 visitors to New Zealand, contributing an estimated NZD $379 million (~USD $216.46) to New Zealand's economy.
"The Alliance continues to improve access between New Zealand and key destinations across China, while supporting inbound tourism and business links with one of our largest trading partners,” said Air New Zealand's Chief Transformation and Alliances Officer Mike Williams. “This decision reflects the role the partnership plays in strengthening international connectivity between our two countries."
Between New Zealand and Mainland China, both airlines operate up to 17 weekly return flights – up to 10 weekly flights by Air China and up to 7 by Air New Zealand.
