AirAsia X is making its re-entry to Europe with the announcement of its first direct service to Istanbul, Turkey.
The long-haul arm of AirAsia announced the new route – from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport – will start on November 14 with four weekly flights (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
According to AirAsia, the new route will allow customers to make onward connections at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport – Istanbul's secondary airport - to over 117 international and 40 domestic destinations, while also allowing travelers from Istanbul connections across AirAsia's network of 130 destinations.
In a statement, AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said: “Istanbul has always been a dream destination for many of our guests, and its launch marks another proud moment in our journey to rebuild stronger than ever. Hot on the heels of our recent expansion into Central Asia, this long-awaited route takes us one step closer to delivering longer connectivity across continents.”
Ismail also stated the new route to Istanbul will allow Muslims traveling for their Umrah pilgrimage to include a stop at the city along as part of a “Umrah Plus Istanbul” package offered by Capital A's Islamic lifestyle arm ikhlas.com.
AirAsia X will be the lone Malaysia-based carrier offering flights between Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul. Turkish Airlines operates up to three departures daily from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul's primary air hub Istanbul Airport.
The announcement of the new route to Istanbul follows AirAsia X's recent expansion to Central Asia as it plans for more services to Europe. After launching flight to Almaty, Kazakhstan last year, this year AirAsia X introduced flights to Karachi, Pakistan and will launch a new route to Tashkent, Uzbekistan on October 15.
