Air India AI171 crashed after take-off from Ahmedabad, India on the afternoon of Thursday, June 12 (local time).


According to initial reports, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with the registration VT-ANB was the aircraft involved in the crash was carrying 242 people – 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Based on videos on social media and data from Flightradar24 – including the airport CCTV – the aircraft initially climbed to around 625 feet (191 meters) before gradually descending and crashing into a medical school's residential building. As the landing gear remained down and pitched up, the flight crew issued a mayday call to air traffic control in Ahmedabad. 


AI171 was operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. As of the writing of the article, 241 of the 242 on board were killed. 24 people on the ground were also killed. One survivor of the crash has been reported. 


Air India reported that the flight was carrying 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nations, and one Canadian. 


Operations at Ahmedabad Airport was temporarily suspended immediately after the crash, but have since resumed. 


VT-ANB was a 11.5-year old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. First delivered to Air India in January 2014, the crash is the first hull loss and fatal crash involving a 787.
