Batik Air is expanding its international network with new routes to Shanghai and Sydney.

The first of the two routes to be launched by the Malaysia-based airline – between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai Pudong – will start on June 23 using Boeing 737 aircraft. The new route will add to Batik Air's current services to Mainland China where it operates flights to Changsha, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xiamen, and Zhengzhou.

Separately, Batik Air will launch daily direct flights to Sydney from Kuala Lumpur on July 1. Using widebody Airbus A330 aircraft, the airline will expand its services to Sydney where it currently operates flights to the city via Denpasar (Bali). Other cities served by Batik Air in Australia include Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth.

“Batik Air continues to align its network with sustained market demand, and the addition of Shanghai and Sydney strengthens two of our most important international corridors,” said Batik Air Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy. “These routes support tourism and business travel while enhancing overall connectivity between Malaysia and key global markets.”

Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the fuel supply situation, Muthy stated the airline has a positive outlook for travel demand in the region.

“Despite the broader global environment, the outlook for travel demand remains positive. The airline remains focused on maintaining a balanced and sustainable approach to growth, identifying opportunities where demand is strongest while continuing to support Malaysia’s position as a preferred destination in the region.”

Between Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai, Batik Air will compete with five airlines on the route - Shanghai Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Spring Airlines, AirAsia X, and Juneyao Airlines.

Batik Air will be the third Malaysia-based airline to operate flights between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. The other two are Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X.
