As part of British Airways' network expansion plans for the winter 2026 (IATA Northern Winter 2026), new routes will be launched to Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur, and Colombo. The airline will also expand its flight frequencies to Tokyo.
British Airways will start daily flights between London Heathrow and Melbourne via Kuala Lumpur from January 9, 2027. The first return flight will depart Melbourne back for Heathrow on January 11, 2027.
Melbourne Airports reported British Airways will use its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring four cabin classes – First, Club World (Business), World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy), and World Traveller (Economy).

Separately, British Airways will launch a new three-times weekly service (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) between London Gatwick and Colombo from October 23.

Response to Middle East Situation
British Airways recently introduced seven additional return flights from London to Bangkok and Singapore in recent weeks to meet rising demand due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
“The airline has added more than 3,300 extra seats between 10 and 19 March for customers traveling to and from these destinations and continues to monitor its network closely to make adjustments based on where customers want to fly.”
The airline has extended the temporary reduction in flights to the region. Services to four cities – Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, and Tel Aviv – remain cancelled through May 31. Services to Doha are cancelled until April 30.
British Airways plans to resume its flights between Heathrow and Abu Dhabi from October 25.
Speaking on the response to British Airways' response to the ongoing situation in the Middle East, Neil Chernoff, British Airways' Chief Planning and Strategy Officer said: "We know there is short-term demand as a result of the situation in the Middle East. To support customers with alternative routes from popular destinations we have already launched additional flights, and we will continue to monitor customer demand and add flights to our schedule if we’re able to do so.”
Flight Frequency Increase to Tokyo
From October 25, British Airways will increase its flights between Heathrow and Tokyo Haneda from 10-times weekly to twice-daily (14-times weekly) using Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.
British Airways will also add more flights to cities including Cape Town, Barbados, San Jose (Costa Rica), Kingston, Punta Cana, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Houston.
