Boeing and Cathay Group has announced an order for an additional 14 widebody 777-9 aircraft from the Hong Kong-based carrier.
Boeing and the Cathay Group has announced an order for an additional 14 widebody 777-9 aircraft from the Hong Kong-based airline group.
Adding to its previous orders for 21 777-9s placed in 2013, Cathay Pacific is exercising its purchase rights for the additional widebody jets. The airline will now have 35 777-9s on order which are expected to be delivered starting in 2027. The first of the 14 newly ordered 777-9s are expected to arrive starting in 2034.
In its 2025 Interim Results report, Cathay Group also stated it has secured additional purchase rights for up to 7 more 777-9s.
According to Cathay Group, the new order for the additional jets is part of the airline's fleet renewal and expansion plan and other investments such as the introduction of new cabin products, lounges, and digital innovation. The new order brings the total investment to over HKD $100 billion (~USD $12.74 billion)
“We plan to expand and renew our fleet with the additional 777-9 aircraft, enabling us to continue our rich history of connecting the world with our Hong Kong hub," said Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Cathay Group. "Cathay Pacific aims to further strengthen our ongoing partnership with Boeing and leverage the world-class features of the new 777-9 as we strive to become the world's best premium airline."
The new order will continue the use of the 777 family of aircraft by Cathay Pacific, which has been operated by Hong Kong's hometown airline for over 30 years. According to planespotters.net, Cathay Pacific operates a fleet of around 50 777-300/ER aircraft.
Cathay Group plans to introduce a new First Class product onboard the widebody jets.

"This latest order demonstrates the value of the 777-9 and further strengthens the airline's tradition of delivering superb comfort, convenience and connectivity to passengers for years to come."
With the additional orders for the 777-9, Cathay Group will have more than 100 aircraft on order. The airline also has orders for narrowbody Airbus A320/A321neo, the widebody A330-900 (A330neo), and the A350F (Freighter).
