Delta Airlines has selected Amazon Leo to provide high-speed, low-latency internet onboard 500 aircraft.
Building upon the current relationship between Delta and Amazon, the installation of Amazon Leo on 500 Delta aircraft will start in 2028. Delta will integrate Amazon Webs Services (AWS), Amazon Leo, and other Amazon technologies and AI to enhance the customer experience across the entire journey.
Using Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite communications network, passengers onboard domestic and international flights operated by Delta will be able to surf the internet, stream content, and stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues.
At present, Delta provides internet onboard its flights through partnerships with Viasat and Hughes. Members of Delta's frequent flier program SkyMiles are able to access fast, free Wi-Fi provided by T-Mobile. Since its introduction in 2023, Delta offers it on more than 1,150 aircraft across its global network. The airline will be introducing it on its Trans-Pacific routes this fall.
“Delta’s future is global,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s Chief Executive Officer. “This agreement gives us the fastest and most cost-effective technology available to better connect the world today, and it deepens our work with a global leader that shares our ambition to build what’s next — creating even stronger human connection for our people and our customers for years to come.”
“We’ve designed Leo to provide high-speed internet to the billions of people on Earth without reliable connectivity, and this agreement with Delta is a great example of the impact and scale of the technology — bringing even faster in-flight Wi-Fi to tens of millions of passengers who fly Delta every year," said Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon. “People increasingly want to stay connected wherever they are in the world, and Leo’s speed and reliability is going to have a big impact for businesses, governments, and consumers. It’s going to make the in-flight experience so much better, and it’s going to change what’s possible while traveling.”
According to Amazon, each Amazon Leo-equipped aircraft will have a single purpose-built phased array antenna that supports download speeds up to 1Gbps and upload speeds up to 400Mbps.
