Etihad confirms order for 28 Boeing 787s, 777X

As part of newly announced deals between the United States (US) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi-based Etihad confirmed orders for 28 widebody Boeing jets.


The 28 newly ordered Boeing aircraft for Etihad will consist of a mix of Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X. According to reports from other media outlets such as Reuters, the deal is worth around USD $14.5 billion, and the aircraft will be equipped with GE engines.


While the airline has not reported the exact breakdown of the 787 and 777X variants for the order, Etihad reports the aircraft are expected to join the airline's fleet starting in 2028.


“This commitment reflects our approach of carefully managing our fleet and expanding in line with demand and our long-term network plans,” said Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer, Etihad Airways. “Since 2023, we’ve made consistent additions to our fleet, and this latest step ensures we continue to meet our future requirements.”

Neves and Etihad stated the additional aicraft will ensure the airline will be “well positioned to deliver extraordinary customer experiences and to remain financially self sustainable.”  

Currently with a fleet of over 90 aircraft, Etihad aims to expand its fleet to arouund 150 aircraft by 2030.  

According to Boeing's Orders and Deliveries report, Etihad has around 53 listed on order from Boeing including 25 777X, 8 787-9, and 10 787-10s as of April 2025. 

Etihad's announcement follows a large order for over 200 widebody Boeing aircraft by Qatar's national airline Qatar Airways.
