The Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) will open the new passenger departure facilities at Terminal 2 (T2) on May 27.
Announced by Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) Chairman Fred Lam and Hong Kong's Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan during the Chinese New Year celebrations at HKIA, the opening of the T2 departure facilities is expacted to help HKIA meet the anticipated surge in passengers during the upcoming summer peak season.
The expanded T2 offers new generation smart check-in facilities for passengers flying with 15 airlines that will move to the facility in phases. The departure facilities are also connected to the Airport Express platform and Terminal 1.
Among the airlines reported to be included in the shift to Terminal 2 include Hong Kong Airlines, HK Express, and Greater Bay Airlines. Until the passenger concourse and boarding gates open (scheduled to be between late 2026 to early 2027), travelers checking in for their flights at T2 will still board their flights at Terminal 1.
“AAHK has been working closely with relevant government departments, airlines, passenger handling agents and other stakeholders to prepare for the commissioning of T2’s departure facilities, with a robust and comprehensive programme of familiarisation activities, training sessions, drills, and exercises already underway.”
Part of HKIA's Third Runway System that started in 2016, the first phase of the new terminal saw the opening of the Coach Hall at T2 in September 2025. Work is ongoing to complete the T2 concourse and boarding gates, which will be connected to the soon-to-open departure facilities with a 2,600 meter long Automated People Mover. A new Baggage Handling System (BHS) between T2 and the T2 concourse is also being built.
