As the expansion work of Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) nears completion, the airport operator Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) announced the expanded Terminal 2 will be reopened in phases starting in late September.

The HKIA announced the first passenger facility to open at HKIA Terminal 2 – the indoor Coach Hall – will be opened on September 23. The Coach Hall features 41 tour bus parking spaces for cross-boundary and local coaches, and limousines. Ticket counters and boarding points for the cross-boundary buses and limousines, and the tour bus boarding spaces at Car Park 1 will be relocated to the Coach Hall Terminal 2. The tour bus boarding spaces in Car Park 1 will be shifted to help ease traffic at Terminal 1 during peak times, and to address the increasing usage demand at Car Park 1.

Following the opening of the Terminal 2 Coach Hall, HKIA stated the next phase will include the departure facilities – including check-in counters and related facilities – during the second quarter of 2026 followed by other remaining arrival and departure facilities.

Terminal 2 will feature a Y-shaped concourse with a floor area of around 280,000 sqm, doubling the size of the existing building and increasing its passenger handling capacity to 50 million per year. The terminal will feature a new Baggage Handling System (BHS) and a 2600m Automated People Mover (APM) between the terminal and the T2 Concourse.

In a statement, the AAHK said: “Airport Authority Hong Kong will continue to work closely with relevant government departments, airlines, passenger handling agents and other relevant airport stakeholders on the preparatory work for T2 commissioning, including familiarization and training, to ensure smooth operation. Drills and exercises will also be arranged to practise and test the contingency and emergency response plans.”

The reopening and expansion of HKIA Terminal 2 – with an estimated worth of around HKD $12.9 billion (~USD $1.64 billion) - supports HKIA's Three Runway System (3RS).

According to reports by Hong Kong-based Dimsum Daily andHong Kong Free Press, Hong Kong Airlines, Greater Bay Airlines, and Cathay Group's budget subsidiary HK Express – along with several Southeast Asia-based airlines operating at HKIA – will shift their check-in counters from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 starting in March 2026.

The shift will result in the diversion of around 15 million passengers – around 20% of HKIA's annual total passenger traffic – from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2.
