Indian budget airline IndiGo has announced its plans to launch its first long-haul routes to Europe to both Manchester, United Kingdom (UK); and Amsterdam.

Using its recently delivered leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, IndiGo will launch its first route to Europe – between Mumbai and Manchester – on July 1. IndiGo will operate three weekly flights on the route. With the new route, IndiGo will be the first to offer direct flights between India and the Northern UK.

Speaking on the announcement of its first route to Europe, IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers said: “IndiGo’s long-haul foray marks a pivotal moment in our global expansion journey. We are very proud as well as excited to open the sale of our first long-haul service connecting Mumbai with Manchester, a very special route in many ways.”

Following the launch of the Mumbai-Manchester route, IndiGo will launch its new route between Mumbai and Amsterdam the following day (July 2). The airline will also operate three weekly flights on the route.

According to IndiGo, it will upgrade its inflight dining experience on the new European routes by offering complimentary hot meals and beverages to all passengers.

IndiGo recently received the first of six leased Boeing 787-9s from Norse Atlantic Airways in March. The first Norse-operated flight using the 787 took place the same month between Mumbai and Bangkok. The widebody aircraft features 338 seats – including 56 IndiGoStretch seats with a 43-inch seat pitch in a 2-3-2 configuration, and 282 Economy seats with a 31-inch seat pitch in a 3-3-3 configuration.

Between Mumbai and Amsterdam, KLM is the lone competing airline on the route. IndiGo will be the lone airline offering direct flights between Mumbai and Manchester, where travelers make connections at cities in Europe and the Middle East for trips between the two cities.
