Japan and South Korea have launched a trial of dedicated immigration counters for citizens of both countries at select airports.

As part of the celebrations commemorating 60 years of diplomatic ties between Japan and South Korea, the one-month trail period during June will see the use of special immigration lanes for citizens of both countries at four airports – 2 each in Japan and South Korea. The two Japanese airports are Tokyo Haneda (Terminal 3) and Fukuoka, while the program will be implemented at Seoul Gimpo and Busan Gimhae in South Korea.

Korean and Japanese short-term visitors who have visited the other country at least once during the past year (from June 1, 2024) can use the dedicated lanes, provided their flights arrive between 9AM (0900H) and 4PM (1600H). While eligible passengers can use the dedicated lanes at Busan and Fukuoka, it is limited to passengers arriving on four airlines at Haneda and Gimpo – All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan Airlines (JAL), Asiana, and Korean Air.

Both Japan and South Koreans are the biggest source of tourists of each other. According to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), of the nearly 29 million (28.69 million) Koreans who travelled abroad in 2024, nearly 9 million (8.82 million) visited Japan. Of the over 16 million visitors to South Korea the same period, the country saw around 3.2 million visitors from Japan.
