Kansai Airport to complete renovation work at Terminal 1 this March

The operator of the Kansai International Airport – the main international gateway to Osaka - announced it will complete renovation work at the airport's Terminal 1 by the end of March.


In a release, Kansai Airports announced the grand opening celebrating the completion of renovation work at Kansai Airport – first started in 2021 – will take place on March 27.


Ahead of the grand opening date, the opening of the South immigration area and arrival duty-free stores on the third floor will take place on February 26. On March 18, the North side security checkpoints, the 4th floor North/South retail and service stores, North immigration/arrival duty-free stores on the third floor, and the 2nd floor food court. The common lounges – KIX Lounge Premium and KIX Lounge Kansai – will then be opened on March 27.


Kansai International Airport Terminal 1 Renovation


The renovation of Terminal 1 Kansai International Airport to ensure the airport could continue to accommodate the growing air traffic as the city of Osaka and Japan's Kansai region hosts the EXPO 2025.


Since 2021, the renovation work was done in three phases.


Phase 1 of the renovation  – completed in October 2022 – increased the aircraft parking stands for international flights, a new consolidated domestic departure area, and the move of the international arrival area to the center of Terminal 1.


Towards the end of 2023 (December 2023) – the airport saw the completion of Phase 2 which included the centralization of the departure immigration area, a large 2,500m2 duty free shop area – the largest at an international airport in Japan, and a waiting area called the PLAZA and 4MOOD.


With the updates, Kansai International Airport will be able to accommodate 40 million international movements per year.


During the year 2024, Kansai Airports reported that Kansai International Airport handled 30.6 million passenger movements. The airport handled 23.9 million international passenger movements.
