The parent company of Malaysia Airlines announced the transition of the operations of MASwings to AirBorneo will take effect on January 1, 2026.
“Effective 1 January 2026, AirBorneo will assume full legal and operational responsibility for all services previously operated by MASwings. This includes flight operations, customer service and the management of all passenger-related matters,” MAS wrote in its statement.
MAS further advised that MASwings branding may be continue to be visible during the initial phase of the transition, as AirBorneo progressively establishes and rolls out its new corporate identity.
The transition follows the completion of the ownership transfer process of the East Malaysia-based commuter airline under the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) signed between MAG and the Sarawak Government back on February 12, 2025.
Established in 2007, MASwings – based in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia – was founded to provide regional connectivity in East Malaysia states of Sarawak and Sabah along with the territory of Labuan. The airline operates a fleet of 14 aircraft – comprising of 8 ATR 72 and 6 DHC-6-400 Twin Otters – to 23 destinations within Malaysia.
“MAG remains committed to supporting a smooth and seamless transition and acknowledges MASwings’ contribution to strengthening regional and rural air connectivity over nearly two decades. Since its inception, MASwings has played a vital role in delivering Rural Air Services (RAS), providing essential air links between remote and interior communities and major urban centres. These services have supported access to healthcare, education, government services, commercial activities and tourism, while contributing to the broader socio-economic development of Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan.”
According to MAG, MASwings has operated over 430,000 flights serving more than 19 million passengers over its operational history.
“As a subsidiary of MAG, MASwings further strengthened the Group’s aviation ecosystem by enhancing connectivity with Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, improving both domestic and international access for travellers in East Malaysia and beyond.”
MAG's airline portfolio currently comprises of Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal by Malaysia Airlines.
