SUM Air – a new, recently launched South Korean regional carrier – has placed a new order for four ATR 72-600 aircraft.
Signed during a bilateral economic forum between South Korea and France, SUM Air will take on four firm orders for the ATR 72-600 with four additional purchase rights. Deliveries are scheduled from 2028.
Founded in 2022, Seoul-based SUM Air launched its first commercial flight between Seoul Gimpo and Sacheon on March 31. The new regional airline plans to operate flights to regions that are underserved by the major airlines with larger aircraft, and gradually expand its domestic and international network.
According to SUM Air's Chief Executive Officer Yongduck Choi, the newly ordered aircraft will be used for flights operating to island airports in South Korea such as Ulleungdo, Baengnyeongdo, and Heuksando.
The new airport in Ulleuongdo – located 120 kilomters off the eastern coast of South Korea in the Sea of Japan - is currently under construction. SUM Air plans to launch flights to the island once it is completed.

“The ATR 72-600, optimized for short-haul operations, will play a pivotal role in enabling Sum Air to deliver air services that connect islands and regions across Korea,” Choi said.
Nathalle Tarnaud Laude, Chief Executive Officer, ATR added: “With this aircraft, SUM Air can reliably serve communities across Korea, from east to west and from the mainland to future island airports, while keeping operations economical and environmentally responsible.”
SUM Air currently has one ATR 72-600 aircraft leased from Singapore-based leasing firm Avation. The aircraft has a capacity for 72 passengers.
