Summary

Philippine Airlines will suspend its flights from Cebu to both Baguio and Laoag this summer.

Philippine Airlines will suspend its flights from Cebu to both Baguio and Laoag this summer.

According to the latest update of Philippine Airilnes' domestic timetable (last updated May 31), the Manila-based carrier will suspend the thrice-weekly direct flights between Cebu in the Central Philippines and Baguio in Central Luzon. The last flights on the route will be on June 30.

On Philippine Airlines' Cebu-Baguio route – first opened in December 2022 – the airline use De Havilland Dash-8 turboprop aircraft on the route. With direct route, the travel time by air between the two cities is one hour and 45 minutes. From Manila, the travel time by land to Baguio is around 4-5 hours.

The reasons for the route suspension is varied based on several reports. According to a report from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Baguio City tourism officials stated the suspension will be during the monsoon season an could resume once the rainy season ends.

“PAL told us and the mayor (Benjamin Magalong) way earlier, so we have been expecting [the suspension],” Aloysius Mapalo, city tourism officer, was quoted saying in the report.

“During its operations here, we saw a good number of visitors from the Viasayas and even foreigners who entered the country via the Mactan-Cebu International Airport,” Mapalo further added.

A separate report from the Philippine Star, stated the route will end due to poor passenger traffic numbers.

Cebu-Laoag Suspension

In addition to the suspension of the Cebu-Baguio route, Philippine Airlines will be suspending its twice-weekly flights from Cebu to Laoag in Northern Luzon.

On Philippine Airlines' domestic timetable, the last flight between Cebu and Laoag will be on June 28.

The Cebu-Laoag route was just launched less than seven months ago in December 2023. Philippine Airlines also uses Dash-8 aircraft on the route. The flight time between the two cities is around 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Philippine Airlines also operates daily flights to Laoag from Manila.
