Shenzhen Airlines will make its debut in Australia when it launches a new route to Melbourne before year's end.

According to Melbourne Airport, Shenzhen Airlines will launch its thrice-weekly Shenzhen-Melbourne service on December 23. Using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, the new flights will add more than 95,000 seats a year to the city of Melbourne.

Shenzhen Airlines is China's fifth largest airline and a member of the Star Alliance. It will become the 40th international airline and the 10thMainland China-based carrier operating at Melbourne.

In a statement about the launch of the Shenzhen-Melbourne route, Shenzhen Airlines Vice President Na Na said “The new Shenzhen-Melbourne direct route marks a pivotal milestone in Shenzhen Airlines' global strategy, serving as a vital air bridge deepening ties between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Victoria.”

Na added: “Our close collaboration with Melbourne Airport will efficiently facilitate two-way flows of trade, education, and cultural exchanges, delivering a more convenient and comfortable direct service for tens of thousands of passengers."

“Shenzhen Airlines’ decision to choose Melbourne as its first Australian destination reinforces Melbourne Airport’s position as Australia’s 24/7 international gateway,” said Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos. “This announcement is a significant milestone in Melbourne Airport’s international growth story as we continue to bring competition and choice into the market for our passengers.”

The current Mainland Chinese airlines operating at Melbourne Airport include Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Sichuan Airlines, and Xiamen Air.

Shenzhen will become the latest Mainland Chinese destination from Melbourne, which includes Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Chengdu Tianfu, and Haikou.

The addition of Shenzhen will also strengthen the connections from Melbourne to China's Greater Bay Area (Guangdong, and the Chinese Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong, and Macao). Travelers will be offered flights to three cities in the region – Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
