As part of efforts to boost tourism in Thailand, the country's Tourism and Sports Ministry has proposed to to offer free domestic flights to 200,000 foreign visitors.
First reported by the Bangkok Post, the campaign – called “Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights” - aims to encourage tourists to visit other destinations beyond the main cities of the country.
According to the report, the program would partner with six Thailand-based carriers – Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai Vietjet – to offer the free domestic ticket upon booking an international flight with an entry to Thailand.
The program – scheduled to run between September and November - is pending approval from Thailand's cabinet. Thailand's Tourism and Sports Ministry expects the program will generate THB 8.8 billion (~USD $15.4 billion) in revenue from a budget of THB 700 million (~USD $1.23 billion). It is reported that each ticket would be provided a government subsidy of THB 1750 (~USD $54) for one-way tickets, and THB 3,500 (USD $107) for roundtrip tickets.
As of August 17, Thailand has seen a 7% year-on-year decrease in foreign tourists. The country has welcomed 20.8 million foreign tourists to date.
In 2024, Thailand welcomed over 35 million foreign visitors which generated over THB 1.8 billion (~USD $55.15 million).
