After nearly a decade after placing its first order for the Boeing 737 MAX, Vietjet recently welcomed the first of 200 MAX jets from the US aircraft manufacturer.

Vietjet took delivery of its first 737 MAX 8 (737-8) – the first aircraft from Boeing for the Vietnam-based budget carrier - during a ceremony held at Boeing's Delivery Center in Seattle, US on September 21.

According to Vietjet, the newly delivered 737 MAX and the rest of the ordered aircraft will be deployed on Vietjet’s high-demand regional routes and support the airline's growth plans.

During the delivery ceremony, Vietjet Chairwoman Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao said: “The first Boeing aircraft received under this historic order is the result of nearly a decade of partnership between Boeing and Vietjet. It marks the start of hundreds more deliveries in the years ahead.”

“On behalf of the Boeing team, we are honored to join Vietjet Air in celebrating the airline’s first Boeing airplane,” added Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

In 2016, first placed an order for 100 737 MAX jets – the first for Boeing aircraft by the all-Airbus aircraft operator. Vietjet then followed that order with another for 100 more MAX jets in 2018. All the ordered aircraft are worth around USD $32 billion which includes commitments for 100 high-density 737 MAX 8200s, 20 MAX 8s, and 80 MAX 10s. The deliveries for the aircraft were delayed due to the global groundings of the MAX and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently with a fleet of 100 aircraft mostly comprised of narrowbody Airbus A320/A321 family aircraft, Vietjet has commitments for nearly 400 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
