Summary

To help ease congestion and improve airport operational efficiency at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the Vietnamese government is conducting a trial which will reduce the airspace restriction around the city's airport from 3000m (~10000ft) to 1500m (~4920ft).

Reported by VnExpress, the trial will be conducted from December 19 through March 31, 2026. The period will coincide with the peak Tet period (Lunar New Year).

According to the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), the trial plan to reduce space was approved by the country's Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army. Studies were conducted along with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam and other agencies.

The 3000m restriction has been cited as a cause of congestion in the airspace over Tan Son Nhat-Bien Hoa-Long Thanh –especially during military operations in Bien Hoa (34km from Tan Son Nhat) and adverse weather conditions. The easing of the restrictions will allow aircraft to avoid unnecessary detours and delays, saving time and fuel.

With the start of operations Long Thanh International Airport scheduled on December 19, the new airport is expected to create greater airspace flexibility in the area.
