Vietnam's new mega air hub Long Thanh International Airport to open on December 1

The state airport operator of the Long Thanh International Airport announced Vietnam’s new mega airport will open for commercial flights will open on December 1.

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) stated with the opening of Long Thanh it hopes the new hub will grow into a regional transit hub to rival established gateways in Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. ACV also hopes it would reclaim long-haul connecting traffic that flows to the other competing airports.

Long Thanh will be part of a phased plan to split flights between the new airport and the current hub at Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Pending approval from Vietnam’s government, long haul international and cargo flights will be shifted to Long Thanh starting on the opening day through March 2027. It will be followed by the gradual shift of all international flights to the new airport after 2030. Tan Son Nhat Airport will remain a domestic hub and serve non-scheduled international flights including charters. 

Located around 40 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City, the Long Thanh International Airport is scheduled to open in late 2026. The new airport was built with investments worth around VND336.63 trillion (~USD $12.8 billion), and is expected to ease the congestion at Tan Son Nhat Airport. When completed, the airport is designed to serve up to 100 million passengers per year. 

ACV expects the initial capacity of Long Thanh Airport to handle 25 million passengers a year. Operational testing and transfer airport operation will be done with testing phases leading up to the December 1 opening.
