The operator of Vietnam’s major air hubs has proposed shifting more than 90% of the international passenger traffic currently handled at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport to the new Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai province starting early next year.
Reported by outlets such as the VnExpress, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) submitted its proposal to the Vietnamese government outlining the phased transition of operations between the current and future hub of Ho Chi Minh City. Pending approval, the plan will be done in two phases scheduled until 2030.
During the first phase – starting late this year through March 2027 – all long haul international passenger and cargo flights currently at Tan Son Nhat Airport will be moved to Long Thanh. This will account for around 19% of all international passenger traffic currently at Tan Son Nhat Airport.
Following the first phase, the second phase will be from March 2027 through 2030. At this time, all international routes – except for short-haul routes under 1,000 kilometers operated by Vietnam-based airlines – will be shifted to Long Thanh Airport. By 2027, Long Thanh will handle 90% of the international passenger traffic currently served at Ho Chi Minh City, before all international flights are transferred after 2030.
Tan Son Nhat Airport will remain a domestic hub and serve non-scheduled international flights including charters.
Located around 40 kilometers east of Ho Chi Minh City, the Long Thanh International Airport is scheduled to open in late 2026. The new airport was built with investments worth around VND336.63 trillion (~USD $12.8 billion), and is expected to ease the congestion at Tan Son Nhat Airport. When completed, the airport is designed to serve up to 100 million passengers per year.
