Embraer has secured ETOPS certification for its E2 jets, paving the way for operators of the E2 to use the aircraft to fly direct non-limited routes over water and other remote areas.
In a release, the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer announced it has been granted ETOPS-120 (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) approval for the E190-E2 and the E195-E2 from three aviation regulators - Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority ANAC (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil), the US FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), and EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency).
Per the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ETOPS is a set of regulations and standards issued for airlines to adhere to should an airline operator intend to fly an aircraft farther than one-hour (60 minutes) from a diversion airport. It is usually given to twin-engine aircraft operated by airlines -previously limited to three- and four-engine aircraft – able to operate with a one-engine-inoperative-speed over water or remote lands. ETOPS-120 means the aircraft can operate flights more than two hours (120 minutes) away from the nearest airfield.
“The granting of ETOPS-120 capability is testimony to the aircraft’s design and to the maturity of the systems; ETOPS certification requires the fleet of aircraft in operation to reach cumulative flying hour milestones. ETOPS certification for the E2 comes later than expected due to the global pandemic which significantly reduced aircraft operations, slowing down the accumulation of flying hours required,” Embraer said in a statement.
With the certification, Embraer states it will be a “key enabler” for more sales of the E2.
“ETOPS is an important additional capability for the E2, and a key enabler for more sales, especially in Asia Pacific. Airlines flying routes with up to 120-minute diversion time will be able to use straighter, quicker and more fuel efficient routes, and have access to more diversion airports. ETOPS capability is a further optimisation of the E2, already the most fuel efficient aircraft in its segment,” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO Embraer Commercial Aviation.
