Even before the completion of its Terminal 5 project, Singapore’s Changi Airport will get more upgrades including the integration of new tech at Terminal 3, the expansion of the Skytrain fleet, and work to accommodate the new Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
Announced during the annual Changi Airline Awards (CAA), airport operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) revealed the new round of airport upgrade projects that will boost the air hub’s capacity and resilience to support airline growth. More details were then announced on a LinkedIn post after the event.
“For both airlines and passengers, the consistent delivery of a high-quality experience on every journey remains paramount,” said CAG Chief Executive Officer Yam Kum Weng. “To uphold this commitment, we will embark on a series of major upgrades to unlock capacity, to support airlines’ growth and strengthen the resilience of Changi Airport.”
Among the upgrades announced include upgrades to the Baggage Handling System at Terminal 3 (T3) – specifically the early bag storage system. This will support rising demand for early check-in and growing transfer volumes.
The airport will also open more aircraft parking stands. 50 parking stands will be capable to accommodate the new widebody Boeing 777-9 aircraft. Singapore’s flag carrier Singapore Airlines is one of the major customers of the 777-9 with 31 on order.
The current Skytrain fleet will be expanded to transport more passengers with less waiting times during peak hours.
In addition to the airport upgrades, Changi Airport will launch an Off-Airport Check-In service. The first phase of this service will be in collaboration with Singapore Airlines, enabling passengers to check-in and drop off luggage at certain city hotels. According to reports from The Straits Times and Channel News Asia, some of the hotels that have been invited to the program include The Fullerton Hotel, The Fullerton Bay Hotel, and the Marina Bay Sands. The luggage will be securely transferred to Changi Airport and loaded onto departing airport.
Speaking to the airport’s airline partners at the CAA, Yam said: “These investments reinforce the strong foundations we have worked hard together to build, ensuring that Changi remains your strategic partner of choice.”
