American Airlines to launch Chicago-Tokyo flights next spring

American Airlines will resume its flights between Chicago and Tokyo next spring.

The Fort Worth, Texas, USA-based airline announced the launch of the daily Chicago O’Hare-Tokyo Narita service will start on March 27, 2027. While no flight schedule information was released, American will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring 30 Flagship Business and 21 Premium Economy seats on the route.

According to American, the route will be timed for convenient onward connections via Narita operated by fellow oneworld member airline and trans-Pacific Joint Venture partner Japan Airlines (JAL) to popular destinations in Asia such as Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, and Ho Chi Minh City.

“American is proud to mark a new chapter in travel from Chicago with service to Tokyo,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. “Built on the strong foundation of our 100-year history in Chicago and an incredible partnership with Japan Airlines, this new service is a testament to our continued commitment to make our hub stronger, broaden choices for customers and keep Chicago competitive on the world stage.

Tokyo will be American Airlines’ 11th long-haul route from Chicago.

Three airlines currently operate flights between the two cities. United Airlines, Japan Airlines (JAL), and All Nippon Airways (ANA) operate daily flights each from O’Hare to Tokyo Haneda. JAL and ANA also operates daily flights from O’Hare to Narita. United Airlines will add to its services between Chicago and Tokyo with the launch its own daily flights to Narita on October 24.
