Narita Airport to bring back volunteer-guided tours for transit and visiting travelers

After a six year absence, the Narita International Airport will bring back its tour program for travelers transiting though the Tokyo-area air hub, and those staying near the airport.

Upon its relaunch on October 1, the “Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program” will feature tours of six areas around Narita Airport including Narita City, Katori City, Tako Town, Shibayama Town (Museum of Aeronautical Sciences), Sakae Town, and Kozaki Town. Passengers can experience local Japanese cultural, culinary, and historical attractions in the area such as the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple & Omotesando in nearby Narita or visit a sake brewery.

First launched in 2015, the Narita Airport Transit & Stay Program Liaison Committee suspended the program amid the COVID -19 pandemic. The program features 200 volunteer guides including local residents and students who serve as guides for the guests.

“In response to the recovery in demand for inbound travel to Japan, the program will make its full-scale comeback after a six-year hiatus, once again showcasing the attractions of the area around Narita Airport to the world.”

According to the Narita Airport, bookings for the tours with volunteer guides will start on September 15.

In addition paid tours will also be featured for events and activities starting on September 5. These tours will take between half to a full day with professional guides.

“ As well as the immensely popular tours with volunteer guides, the relaunch will also see the addition of new paid tours offering special local experiences, including opportunities to enjoy festivals and participate in cultural activities. Ahead of the full relaunch in October, the first of these paid tours, the “Sogo Reido Temple Otaiyasai Festival Float-Pulling Experience,” will be held on Saturday, September 5.”
