Regular commercial flight operations will resume at the General Santos International Airport (GES) on June 15.

Regular commercial flight operations will resume at the General Santos International Airport (GES) on June 15.

In a Facebook post by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on June 14, the CAAP and the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced the resumption of flight operations after the airport was closed since a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on June 8. Repair work on the damage caused by the earthquake was fast tracked under a directive from Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“Nagsagawa na ang DOTr at CAAP ng kumpletong safety assessment, and we confirmed na pwede nang ituloy bukas ‘yung commercial operations sa GenSan Airport para hindi na maantala ‘yung biyahe ng ating mga pasahero,” Philippine Transport Secretary Banoy Lopez said in a statement.

(Translation from Tagalog to English: "The DOTr and CAAP have conducted a complete safety assessment, and we confirmed that commercial operations at GenSan Airport can resume tomorrow so that the travel of our passengers will not be delayed.”)

Since the earthquake struck and the closure of the airport, operations were restricted to military, government, and humanitarian flights. CAAP has also conducted coordination meetings with airline operators, airport stakeholders, and government agencies to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the airport.

The CAAP has advised passengers to coordinate with their respective airlines regarding flight schedules and travel arrangements.
