Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has announced its plans to double the airport service fee paid by passengers departing the country by the end of 2028.

During the first phase, the MOTC will raise the fee from the current NT$500 (~USD $15.8) to NT$750 (~USD $23.86) on September 1. It will then be raised again two years later on September 1, 2028 to NT$1000 (~USD $31.81).

According to the MOTC, it is the first increase of the airport service fee in 10 years. It has been lower compared to the equivalent fees charged in neighboring countries.

The increase will be used to fund infrastructure projects at airports, particularly the construction of a third terminal and runway at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport.

50% of the current airport service fee of NT$500 is allocated to the country’s Tourism Development Fund, while the other half goes to the Taoyuan International Airport Corporation.

Upon the increase to NT$750 in September, 40% will go to the Tourism Development Fund and 60% for the airport company.

After the final phase at the end of September 2028, the allocation to to the Tourism Development Fund will be lowered to 35%, while the airport company will receive 65%.

The draft amendment proposals were announced on Monday (May 25) and is open for a period for public comment. MOTC can give its final approval after the public comment period ends.
