Taiwan’s government is planning to invest around NTD $673.8 billion (~USD $20.89 billion) for upgrades at airports across the country. Among the airports that will see the upgrades are Beigan, Lanyu, Green Island, and Kaoshiung.

The plan was passed by the National Development Council on July 16, and has been returned to the Executive Yuan for approval. It will include the passenger terminal expansion at Beigan Airport. Lanyu and Green Island airports will see renovations, and the ongoing construction of the new terminal at Kaoshiung International Airport. Kaoshiung’s airport will also have a taxiway relocated and a new parking lot.

Taiwan plans to develop the country to become a major air hub with the improvements of 17 airports across the country to serve 100 million international and 13 million domestic passengers by 2045. In addition the country aims to handle 4.02 million tonnes of cargo by 2045.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation and Communication, the funds will be used to improve airport and infrastructure through 2045. The majority of the funds will come from Taipei Taoyuan Airport operator Taoyuan International Airport Corporation investing NTD $491.6 billion (~USD $15.24 billion), followed by the Civil Aviation Operation Fund with NTD $180 billion (~USD $5.58 billion), and the armed services with NTD $2.2 billion (~USD $68.14 billion).

The investments will also support the ongoing work to develop a third terminal and runway at the country’s main hub at Taipei Taoyuan, and airside pavement improvements at Kinmen Airport.
