Vietravel Airlines to order 50 A220s, A321s

Vietnam-based upstart airline Vietravel Airlines (Vietravel) announced it has signed an agreement to purchase up to 50 narrowbody aircraft from European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.

Signed during an official visit of Vietnam’s General Secretary and President To Lam to France, Vietravel’s order will comprise of 30 A321s including the A321neo and A321XLR and 20 smaller A220s. Deliveries are scheduled to take place starting in 2029.

According to Vietravel, the decision to select both the A220 and the A321 reflects its long-term vision for network development. The A220 will play a strategic role in the airline’s “market-opening” strategy, enabling it to pioneer new direct air links to cities and regions that previously lacked regular direct flights or had limited access. The A321 will serve routes with higher demand and provides the capacity for the airline to expand operations on longer international routes.

Leveraging its planned fleet, Vietravel Airlines aims to gradually expand its international operations from Asia to South Asia, Central Asia, and select Middle Eastern markets.

Vietravel will be the second major order for the A220 in Southeast Asia, following AirAsia’s order for up to 150 of the smaller narrowbody jets. It will also be the second operator of the bigger and long-range A321XLR following Vietjet.

According to planespotters.net, Vietravel Airlines currently has a fleet of 5 narrowbody Airbus A320/A321 aircraft including 1 A320 and 4 A321s.

Founded and based in Hanoi in 2019, Vietravel Airlines is a member of the Vietnam-based conglomerate T&T Group. The airline launched its first flight on 2021. By 2030, Vietravel Airlines plans to expand its fleet to 30-50 aircraft.
