Garuda Indonesia will shift its checked baggage allowance policy from the current weight-based policy to a piece-based concept starting this September.
Applicable to tickets purchase on or after September 1, the baggage allowance policy change is part of the Indonesia-based SkyTeam member carrier’s service transformation. First and Business Class passengers on domestic and international flights will get an allowance of two (2) pieces of baggage weighing up to 32 kilograms each or 64 kilograms total. Economy class customers traveling within Indonesia (domestic) will get one (1) piece with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms. Customers flying Economy class on an international flight will get two (2) pieces up to 23 kilograms each or up to 56 kilograms total.
The new baggage policy replaces the current method of calculating the allowance based on the combined weight of all baggage.

Customers traveling with tickets issued before September 1 will still have the current baggage allowance.
“The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty,” said Garuda Indonesia’s Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mill. “Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily, from the initial stages of their journey through to departure.”
Neil added the new policy will support greater consistency across Garuda Indonesia’s domestic and international networks saying: “The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry. Its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation, support more efficient baggage handling and provide passengers with greater certainty, including when connecting to international flight networks.”
Garuda Indonesia will continue to review and refine the baggage policy based on passenger feedback.
