Air India reduces flights across international network for the summer

As part of its rationalisation of its services across its international network this summer, Air India is suspending select routes including Delhi-Chicago, Delhi-Newark, and Mumbai-New York (JFK), Delhi-Shanghai, Chennai-Singapore, and Delhi-Male.


In a statement, Air India cited a combination factors including continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record high jet fuel prices for international operations which have significantly impacted the commercial viability of certain planned services.


“These changes are aimed at improving network stability and reducing last-minute inconvenience to passengers.”


North America, Europe, and Australia


Between June and August, Air India’s Delhi-Chicago route will be temporarily suspended. Services on the Delhi-Newark and Mumbai-New York (JFK) route will also be temporarily suspended.


Also within North America, the airline will reduce its flights between Delhi and San Francisco from 10-times weekly to 7-times weekly through August. Services between Delhi and Toronto will be reduced from 10 to 5 times weekly through July, before going daily (7 weekly) from August. Flights between Delhi and Vancouver will be reduced from 7 to 5 weekly.


While reducing flights on select routes to North America, Air India will increase its flights between Mumbai and Newark from 3 to 7 weekly.


On its Europe network, Air India will reduce its flights from Delhi to the following cities: Paris (14 to 7 weekly), Copenhagen (4 to 3 weekly), Milan (5 to 4 weekly), Vienna (4 to 3 weekly), Zurich (4 to 3 weekly), and Rome (4 to 3 weekly).


To Australia, Air India will reduce its flights from Delhi to Melbourne (7 to 4 weekly) and Sydney (7 to 4 weekly).


China and Southeast Asia


Between Delhi and Shanghai, Air India will temporarily suspend its flights on the route through August.


Air India temporarily suspend flights between Chennai and Singapore through August while reducing flights to Singapore from Mumbai (14 to 7 weekly) and Delhi (24 to 14 weekly).


The airline will reduce flights on two routes to Bangkok from July: Delhi (28 to 21 weekly) and Mumbai (13 to 7 weekly).


Air India will also reduce its flights between Delhi and Kuala Lumpur from 10 to 5 weekly.


Between India and Vietnam, Air India will reduce its flights from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City (7 to 4 weekly) and Delhi-Hanoi (5 to 4 weekly) during the months of July and August.



South Asia and Indian Ocean


Air India will temporarily suspend its flights on the Mumbai-Dhaka and Delhi-Male routes.


Services on the Delhi-Kathmandu route will be reduced from 42 to 28 weekly in June, before a further reduction 21 weekly in July and August.


Other routes in the region that will see service reductions include Delhi-Dhaka (7 to 4 weekly), Mumbai-Colombo (7 to 4 weekly), and Delhi-Colombo (14 to 12 weekly).


In total, Air India plans to operate more than 1,200 international flights per month to destinations in five continents. 33 weekly flights will be operated to North America, 47 to Europe, 57 to the UK, 8 to Australia, 158 to the Far East, Southeast Asia, and SAARC regions, and 7 weekly flights to Mauritius (Africa).
